a simple yet very famous south indian recipe cooked at every home very frequently - "munakai sambar"
TIME TAKEN: 30 MINS, SERVES: 4
INGREDIENTS:
Toor dal (yellow lentils)

1 cup

Drumstick

1 (cut into pieces)

Small onions (sambar onions)
|
½ cup (peeled)
|
Tomatoes
|
3 medium (chopped)
|
Green chili’s
|
6 (slit)
|
Garlic cloves
|
5 – 6 (crushed)
|
Curry leaves
|
Hand full
|
Turmeric powder
|
A pinch
|
Tamarind paste
|
1 ½ tbsp.
|
Salt
|
To taste
|
Fresh coriander

For garnish

METHOD:
Ø Wash
and soak the toor dal for 15 – 20 mins. Drain the water, add 2 chopped
tomatoes, green chili’s and 2 cup water to the toor dal and pressure cook it
for two whistles, reduce the flame cook it for five minutes and turn off the
gas.
Ø Once
the pressure is released, open the lid, add salt and turmeric powder and mash
the dal into fine paste. Extract juice from the tamarind paste and add the
juice to the mashed dal.
Ø In
another pressure pan, heat oil and temper mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds (methi
seeds), cumin seeds (jeera) and add garlic cloves and onions and saute them
till light brown.
Ø Now
add drumstick pieces, 1 chopped tomatoes and curry leaves and cook it till the
tomatoes are smashed. Now add the mashed dal and add water as required and
pressure cook it for 1 whistle and turn off the gas.
Garnish with fresh coriander and
serve hot…
